Math is a special subject that does not use the English language in the way that other subjects do. In an effort to integrate literacy into my mathematics class, I want to step out of the box and incorporate other subjects into math. One project is to have students conduct research and write a short paper or create a presentation about important mathematicians. This would reinforce the essential skills of reading, writing, and verbal communication in another discipline. A great website that I found is: http://www.storyofmathematics.com/ It has the history of mathematics in chronological order and a list of important mathematicians that I could use to assign students a topic for their project. There is a wealth of information on this website that I would love to incorporate in my class to show students a different side of math they've never seen.(145)
Hey Carlee! I think that integrating other subject areas in your class is such a cool idea. Students often learn better when they are able to relate things to concepts they already know or have heard of and that can happen a lot in multiple classes! Math totally doesn't just have to be solving equations and the resource you found is a great one. Thanks for sharing! WC 67

ReplyDeleteCarlee,
ReplyDeleteI found this resource and idea very useful as a future math teacher. I think assigning a project that highlights math history not only provides literacy content, but promotes that math is more than just numbers. This website is a great reference point for students to choose a topic from. Students may even benefit from knowing who created the formula that they are learning about, and it will remind them of why it was created and its value. Thanks for the tip! WC 83
